Reimagining the
Stand-up
Stool

For Stand-up Comedy
What is a stand-up stool?
“Beside every great stand-up is quite literally a support system: usually three- or four-legged, often patiently waiting with a glass of water.”
– Rebecca from Vulture Furniture

However

There must be more!
In order to capture the emotion and value of the stool, I need to put myself in the comedian's shoes. This led to a new set of insights after an interview with a fellow stand-up comic.

Typology > Absurdity

The stool is absolutely essential on the stage, however stealing the spotlight out of the performer is not one of its jobs. Therefore, keeping the heritage look while creating differentiations through subtle form developments is the key to innovate in this space.

Comforting Handrest: This smooth filleted cut-out provides a comforting space for the comedians to touch providing a sense of security and calmness during a show.
Hidden Crossbean This crossbeam solution was designed to create a stable yet quiet conjunction between the legs and the seats.

Smooth Saddle The curvature opens up seating opportunities and allows the curvature to flow continuously through the entire piece.

Foot Rest The footrest mirrors the curvature of the seat which further enhances the uplifting motif of the stool design.
